Sticking Like a Burr

Sticky Burr #2: The Prickly Peril

A friend recently told me that her son
started to get interested in reading when
he discovered Captain Underpants.
That's a common story, and the fact that
her son has an Asperger's diagnosis may
not be as relevant as the fact that a lot of
kids like Captain Underpants.
Getting any child interested in books may
be as simple as finding a series they like
and popular series are a good place to start.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants
are popular choices that have great kid appeal
because of their funny stories with goofy pictures.
Sticky Burr: Adventures in Burrwood Forest
A short list of funny stories with goofy pictures:
Lenny and Mel, Scaredy Squirrel, and of
course, Sticky Burr, the subject of a new
book and today's review.
Here's what my son wrote about the newest
adventure of that good-natured little seedpod Sticky:
"Sticky Burr started to tell the story.
But then, Scurvy Burr interrupted,
and said he wanted to tell the story.
[I hope he's not too scurvy to tell the story].
They went to Spooky Glen.
They met Burweena.
I remember when she saw Sickly Burr.
[They fell in the bottomless pit]"
The parenthetical remarks are what
he said out loud when I first asked him
to tell me about what he had read a week
ago.
Now, he often cannot or will not remember
what we read the night before, so I thought
this recall very promising. Comic book like
stories sometimes engage him more strongly.
As with the "I hope he's not too scurvy"
remark, an unusual word or phrase sticks
in his mind more than the story.
The Sticky Burr books are aimed at
elementary age kids, but there's enough
there for a middle school reader who still
wants picture support. The pictures
absolutely show what is happening in
the text (a must for readers with autism)
and the humor is silly and character based
(a plus).
If you know a kid w/ autism who'd like to
have a book review posted, comment

Captain Underpants Returns!

Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants

Grandmother and grandchild reading together make for
a nice Norman Rockwell scene. Of course, if your child
has autism, there may be as much jumping up and running
and tangentially related remarks as reading, but still, a very
sweet moment at least, or ten minutes if you're lucky.
My mother mentioned a while back (about 30 posts ago)
that she hadn't had much of a chance to read with
my boy, so I'm trying to change that.
Now maybe Captain Underpants isn't the exact book
you might want to choose for the greatest generation
to read to the youngest generation, but that was the
book my son and I had been reading, so that's what
she got to read.
Jus' fine, really. Yes, he gets up and runs down the
hall at exciting moments, and yes, my mother finds
the book fairly silly, but I think they both enjoy my
son's rendition of Professor Poopypants' lines and
my mother's way with a suspenseful narrative.
So if you have the family gathered, you may
want to try to have your very own skip a generation
reading group. Who knows? You may get ten minutes
to yourself.

Captain Summer Pants

The New Captain Underpants Collection (Books 1-5)

Long before my oldest was reading,
perhaps pre-diagnosis, I recall
an apologetic mom trying to
explain Captain Underpants to
me at a bookstore event.

Even at eight my boy still didn't
go much for the tighty-whitey
clad hero, but he's mildly
interested now (send birthday
wishes, he just turned 10! I'm
trying not to freak out).

Since Underpants provides
little of use for my boy, beyond the
habit of reading, I think of it as
a diversion.
 Treasure Island: Literary Touchstone Edition
This time of year when my boys
seek to make all of us walk the
plank, I seek to interest them in
Treasure Island-a story they
mainly know from Muppets
and Treasure Planet.

Alas, July looks like a post
a week will be the best I can
do.

Stay cool, dive into a book-
